Every year approximately 3 million unwanted dogs are put to death in the U.S. alone. This statistic is particularly disturbing to those who know what special creatures dogs are. Sadly, most of these animals were originally wanted by some person for some reason but when the novelty wore off or when they seemed to require too much time and effort to properly socialize, train and maintain they were dropped at a shelter or turned loose. Don't be one of those people. Wait to get a dog until you're absolutely certain it's the right thing for you to do at this point in your life.
There are many rewards that come with getting a dog but there are also many challenges. Getting a dog should be on the scale just below the decision to have a child. Consider these rules before you do it!
- Rule #1 Never buy, adopt or otherwise acquire a dog on impulse. It's not fair to you or the dog.
- Rule #2 Never get a dog to replace a departed human. It's a totally different kind of companionship.
- Rule #3 Never get a dog because you think it will make you look cool or tough. Buy some new clothes instead.
Still think you're ready for a dog? Take a minute and consider the questions below.
- Do you have one to two hours available in your schedule every day to dedicate to making sure the dog's needs are fully met?
- Do you have an extra $100.00 to $200.00 available in your monthly budget to dedicate to making sure the dog's needs are fully met?
Getting a dog is a lifelong commitment that takes significant daily effort. The pay off is worth it for many but dogs are not for everyone.
