First let's review the rules:
- Rule #1 Never buy, adopt or otherwise acquire a dog on impulse. It's not fair to you or the dog.
- Rule #2 Never get a dog to replace a departed human. It's a totally different kind of companionship.
- Rule #3 Never get a dog because you think it will make you look cool or tough. Buy some new clothes instead.
Now let's say you're ready for a dog. You've given it some serious thought, read a good book or two about dogs and decided that you have the time and money that it takes to properly care for such an animal. Do you also have the energy it takes? Are you a very active person? Do you already run or walk daily to keep in shape? If so, great. If not, that's okay. But these things must factor into the selection process. Though all dogs need some amount of regular exercise there are some that are fine with staying at home curled up on the couch watching TV most of the time. For others this kind of life style is a living hell. Also consider the following:
- How much do you work? Are you away from home for long periods?
- Do you have kids and will they be helping make sure the animal's needs are met?
- Do you know whether or not you or your kids are allergic to dogs?
- Do you live in a house with a large yard or in a small apartment?
Carefully consider which breeds are a good fit for your lifestyle and family structure then make sure the actual animal itself will make a good fit. You may find that the ideal dog for you is mature and mellow. Or maybe it's one just beyond the puppy stage and ready to share in some serious outdoor activity. Maybe you're up to the challenge of raising a puppy. Whatever you're looking for you can likely find at a local shelter or rescue.
